Pilates provides an all over conditioning routine that builds strong, toned muscles without added bulk. It also works to reduce stress, as well as muscle tension brought on by unbalanced posture and everyday aches and pains.
Southside Clinic offers many Pilates class options. You can join us for Mat Pilates (max 10 people per class), Circuit Pilates classes (max 7 people per class) on the studio equipment, and 3:1 and 1:1 studio equipment classes. Please read on for more information about our different class options, and to view the timetable please click here.
Mat pilates is a collection of exercises performed on a Mat, promoting strength, flexibility, stabilisation, posture and breathing. Using small props, the mat workout is fun, dynamic, and will keep you working hard.
Pilates was originally developed by the late Joseph Pilates during WWI, where is was used to rehabilitate injured soldiers.
Mat pilates has a strong focus on the core, providing fantastic support for your low back. The diverse exercises in these mat Pilates classes focus on precise movements, targeting key muscles, gaining control and bringing your body back into ideal alignment. It is a full body workout incorporating breathing, flexibility, strength, stabilisation and posture.
Classes are taught by our Certified Pilates Instructors.
Circuit Pilates is a dynamic class utilising all of the pilates equipment – Reformer – Cadillac – Stability Chair- Spine Corrector – Barrel – Bosu – and a huge variety of small apparatus. This is an intense full body workout giving you strength, flexibility, posture, power and control.
Clients rotate between the pieces of pilates equipment in a circuit style. They will expand your pilates repertoire and challenge you in new ways.
Circuit Pilates classes have a maximum of 7 participants, ensuring individual attention and plenty of opportunity to be on all of the equipment. The class is designed for ‘injury free’ bodies (if you are unsure please have a chat with Simone (our head of the Pilates Department).
Prerequisite: due to the fast pace of the Circuit Pilates class, all participants are required to do a 1:1 assessment prior to joining a group. This ensures you have a good understanding of the pilates method and feel confident using the Pilates equipment.
This 1:1 assessment can also be used as the initial consultation for all Studio 3:1 pilates classes.
3:1 Studio / Clinical Pilates
Studio pilates is commonly offered with 4 or 5 people in a session. Southside Clinic believe that clients get faster and better results from having less people in the group, and we therefore have a maximum of 3 people per studio session. This provides far more personalised attention from the teacher, who can offer wonderful modifications, progressions, regressions and props to make your pilates experience perfectly tailored to you.
We promote quality over quantity. We want you to get the absolute most out of your studio pilates session. Our 3:1 approach mean you will be given more exercises, work harder, have a specialised program tailored to you, have different fun and diverse exercises every week, and importantly… get maximum results!!!
We have the prerequisite that you participate in one 1:1 Clinical Pilates before you can join the 3:1 classes.
1:1 Studio / Clinical Pilates
(book under the appointments tab)
Simone Ivkovic, our Head of Pilates, offers the 1:1 appointments and initial Pilates assessments at Southside Clinic. These are booked via the ‘Book Appointments’ tab at the top right of this page. Studio pilates is performed on specialsed pilates equipment in a safe and controlled environment. Exercises are tailored to the needs of the individual.
Studio pilates clients will be given a postural assessment at their first appointment, and Simone will design an individual program specific to your needs. The program will be progressive and diverse giving you a safe framework to advance your pilates exercises.
Studio Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of key muscles. Core strength and stability is of high importance to support the low back and assist good posture.
The specialised Pilates equipment offers great diversity of exercises. Springs provide resistance training, unstable surfaces challenge balance and stability, props can put you in a safer and more comfortable position, and the adjustable settings allow all of the exercises to be set up to give you maximum benefit.
It is perfect for people with specific needs: injuries, chronic musculoskeletal conditions, postural imbalances, pre/post natal, dancers, athletes, or anyone who wants a personal program tailored to them.
